HEBBURN TOWN (Hebburn Sports & Social Ground)

NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE, HEBBURN TOWN 3-5 ASHINGTON, ATTENDANCE: 65 (h/c)

After a little bit of concern due to the cold and wet weather, my little trip to the North East got underway with a visit to the home of Hebburn Town. As I generally find when I head to a game in the Northern League the welcome is warm and friendly, and tonight was no exception.

The South Tynesiders are celebrating their centenary season having been founded in 1912 as Reyrolles, which was an engineering firm based in Hebburn, before changing their name to Hebburn in 1988 then adding Town in 1999.

After many years in the Wearside League, they joined the Northern League in 1989 and have been in either Division One or Two ever since. They had their best run in the FA Cup in 2011 when they reached the 4th Qualifying round, losing 3-0 to local rivals Gateshead.

The game was a good encounter as the visitors edged an eight goal thriller. The homesters nearly took the lead early doors but an effort from James Luccock struck the upright.

Ashington took the lead after 14 minutes when Andrew Johnson headed home a superb cross, the ball just about squirming over the line. Their advantage was doubled in the 31st minute when Marc Walton smacked home a free kick from about 25 yards out.

Hebburn got themselves back into the game a couple of minutes before the break when Paul Gardiner shot home, after an initial effort was parried. The Hornets were level on the hour when Gardiner fired home his second of the match.

The scores were not level for long as Mark O'Dea (63) reacted quickest to a spot of pinball in the area to hit the ball home.  Glenn Taylor headed home a corner (72) to restore The Colliers' two goal advantage before they went nap when Walton (78) bagged his second of the game with a lovely chip over the advancing 'keeper Dan Regan.

Hebburn's hope of an unlikely comeback were restored on 80 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, Stuart Nicholson scoring from 12 yards, but Ashington saw the game out.

It was then a short walk back to the Metro station and into Newcastle for a couple of nightcaps!
